About the Church

Berea Baptist Church held its first service in May, 1950. Deacons from Olivet Baptist in New Westminster saw a need for a church in Surrey, due to the growing population in the area and some property in Newton was donated by a local senator. The church, originally located on the corner of 62nd avenue and 136th st, was called Reidville Baptist.

In 1978, the church purchased property on 60th and 132nd, and construction began on the current church building. The new name, Berea, comes from the book of Acts: "Now the Bereans were of more noble character than the Thessalonians, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true." (Acts 17:11)

Berea is a part of the Canadian Baptists of Western Canada, and agrees with the CBWC statement of faith.

About the Team

Senior Pastor

Senior Pastor - Doug Liao

Doug first visited Berea in October 2014 as a guest preacher. From that first Sunday, he and his wife Joy felt welcomed and loved by Berea, and they quickly started to find their place in our community. Before coming on staff at Berea in September 2015, Doug was a funeral director and embalmer, a missionary (in Thailand), and had worked in administrative roles at Regent College and at First Baptist Vancouver. Outside of church, Doug enjoys reading, walking, and music (both listening and playing).

Worship Director - Linda Hiepler

Office Manager - Diane Braun

Berea is also led by a team of Elders (Nancy Bailey, Karen Peters, Dave Pringle and Jessica Tan) and our Business Team (Ryan Greville, Heidi Nielsen, and Graham Wiegner).
